A fireplace is often a focal point of the room, so chips, scratches and worn stone can be particularly noticeable. Hampshire Surface Repair repairs and restores suitable fireplace surrounds, mantelpieces and hearths, helping them look their best while retaining their original character.
We work with marble, limestone, granite, slate and other natural stone. Our approach depends on the material, its finish and the position of the damage.
This marble fireplace had developed cracks and discolouration from years of use. We cleaned the surround and hearth with specialist carbon-removing products to lift soot and ingrained deposits from the stone.
The cracks were then filled with carefully colour-matched resins. Rather than trying to disguise the repairs as plain white marble, we worked with the stone’s existing pattern so the repaired lines resemble natural veins. Once the repairs had been shaped and finished, the marble was sealed to help protect it and make future cleaning easier.
The result is a cleaner, more cohesive fireplace that retains the character of the original marble.
Chip, Crack and Edge Repairs
Exposed hearth edges and corners can become chipped through everyday use. We clean and prepare the damaged area, then rebuild and shape it using a repair material suited to the stone. Colour, pattern and finish are matched as closely as possible to the surrounding surface.
Stable cracks and small holes may also be filled and blended. If a crack is caused by movement or heat damage, we will assess whether a cosmetic repair is appropriate before work begins.
Fireplace Cleaning
Soot, dust and previous cleaning products can leave a stone fireplace looking dull or uneven. We use methods suited to the material to remove surface contamination safely. Some staining may have penetrated the stone and cannot always be removed completely.
Honing and Polishing
Scratches, dull areas and etch marks on suitable marble or limestone can often be improved through honing or polishing. We refine the stone to complement its existing finish, whether that is matt, satin or polished.
Sealing Natural Stone
Where appropriate, an impregnating sealer can help reduce the absorption of spills and make routine cleaning easier. We assess the stone before sealing and explain the care needed afterwards. A sealer does not prevent heat damage or make the surface stainproof.

Blend the repair and hone or polish the surrounding stone where required.

Apply a suitable sealer if the stone would benefit from it.
Our repairs aim to make damage much less noticeable, although a repair may remain visible on close inspection. Any concern about the safety or operation of a fire or stove should be checked by an appropriately qualified installer before it is used.
